Back to Outdoor Activities!

Posted by andrewburnsqc@gmail.com on April 22, 2021 at 7:45 AM Comments comments (247)

Welcome back to outdoor activities after so long stuck on Zoom.  We meet at Lower Green Community Centre - but principally outdoors - so dress for all weathers please.

The UK Scouts Covid Guidance for Readiness level: YELLOW - until July 2021

This means: Section meetings can take place outdoors and indoors. Some local residential activities with restrictions.

Maximum group size: Activities involving young people: no limit on group size but remain as only one section meeting independently of others. Indoor activities will be limited by the size of the location given social distancing remains.

The number of adults present should be limited to those who are required to be present to support the activity. It’s important to remember that we’re still in the middle of the pandemic and we all have the duty to make sure we’re following the letter and spirit of the guidance.

Activities (including those away from your usual meeting place) should be planned to minimise risk by limiting travel at all times.

Garden Winter Adventure - Birdwatch Special

Posted by andrewburnsqc@gmail.com on January 30, 2021 at 5:25 AM Comments comments (10)

As it is really wet this weekend, wait until it dries up a bit to try cooking a meal in the Great Outdoors in your back garden!

Send in your photos of you cooking outdoors in the cold and rain!

But you can take part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. www.rspb.org.uk

Here is an easy guide to some of the birds you may see in your gardens aroudn Esher.  You get one point for every small bird, two points for every large bird and 5 points for every rare bird sighted this weekend.  And 5 points for any bird that is not on the guide - write down its name and take a photo or draw a picture.

Be a Wellbeing Champion

Posted by andrewburnsqc@gmail.com on November 26, 2020 at 3:45 PM Comments comments (11)

The Coronavirus pandemic has hit young people hard. Some have missed out on end of term celebrations or exams and others have been separated from their loved ones. It’s been really tough. Despite this, Scouts have said that they want to take practical, hands on action to create a better tomorrow for everyone. Mental health is more important than ever, but that stigma still gets in the way of talking about it.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be joining 10,000 Wellbeing Champions: people who have committed to help tear down the taboo around mental health and do what they can to boost people’s wellbeing.  We made a start this week by sharing experiences and pledging to take some action to improve Wellbeing this week.

People fill a Shoebox for a family – not just a child. Our list contains items for all family members and includes items such a shower gel/shampoo, family games, stationary items, gift for mum and dad as well as sweets, soft toys, hats, scarves etc.

The annual Family Shoebox Appeal has been running since 1992 and has delivered smiles to thousands of people in Eastern Europe over the years. They have sent over 900,000 shoeboxes to hundreds of different locations!

Outdoor Activities at Lower Green

Posted by andrewburnsqc@gmail.com on October 15, 2020 at 3:55 AM Comments comments (5)

We have restarted Outdoor Activities at Lower Green and from this week we have access to part of Lower Green Community Centre (the Beaver hall, kitchen and changing rooms) for toilets and as a bad weather alternative.  In line with Scouting Amber guidance we will continue to run most activities outdoors and use a gazebo for shelter.  However we can use the 'Beaver hall' in the centre and the sports changing rooms for indoor activities as a backup.

Please note - the Covid protocol agreed with the Council is that the front door is used only by the Lower Green Pre-school so beavers/cubs will only use the side door nearest the park.  Parents and carers must queue outside the side of the hall at 2m spacing for drop off/collect and cannot go inside the building.

Remember to keep to the parents/carers' Covid Code as agreed to keep us all safe and acting in accordance with our risk assessment (found on our website).

3rd Esher would like to invite you to join us for our first AGM.

It will be held by Zoom on Thursday 8 October at 7pm for about 20 minutes. We will be reviewing the slideshow of the first year, presenting our first annual report and accounts, awarding our first two Chief Scout's Awards and completing the usual formalities.

It would be good to see all the parents, carers and supporters of this new Group to thank all the people that have helped start the Group and keep it going in tough times.

See OSM or the WhatsApp for the usual Zoom link.

A copy of the Annual Report and Accounts 2019-2020 can be downloaded from the https://www.3rdesherscouts.org.uk/information" target="_blank">Information page.

1st Anniversary Camp

3rd Esher Scout Group Anniversary Camp

As our Group Camp at Polyapes has been postponed, we marked our First Anniversary as a Scout Group with a remote camp. In an ideal world, we would replicate the activities as much as possible as they would happen at camp. As not everyone had the kit required or the garden space needed to camp out and cook on an open fire, so there were indoor options available.

Saturday 20th June. 3pm Zoom meeting:

• Flag Break and welcome to the Group Camp (Cubs and Beavers to be in uniform)

• Game • pitch tent/build camp,

• prepare campfire/firepit/chimenea/pre-heat oven. To include safety briefing (see link to Risk assessment)

• Prepare dinner (see menu).

6:30pm Zoom meeting: • A catch-up and share some of the photos of setting up camp/dens and cooking dinner

Campfire songs, • Night wildlife in the garden. Types of birds, bugs and animals to listen/watch out for.

• Wish everyone a good night!

Sunday 21st June: Cook breakfast (see menu) 10am Zoom meeting:  Good morning and welcome! Happy Father’s Day!

• Towel challenge game. Please record video clip for WhatsApp group

• Moment of reflection/prayer • Flag Down

We were delighted to welcome Sally Earthrowl of exxpedition.com who gave an exciting presentation on her expeditions sailing around the world as part of an all female crew.  She leads expeditions doing scientific research which has highlighted the microplastics within our oceans.
